Hello,

(I just posted a question but it failed to appear on the list, so I try again. Sorry for double-posting in case it happens).

I wonder whether it is possible to get a teaching job in Asia (China, Korea etc) for a non-native speaker of English who has CELTA or DELTA though. I've been searching the net and whatever job ad I come across - native speakers are wanted only. I thought of taking the CELTA course in Moscow, but I'm rather hesitant now...

Regards,
Oxana

Dear Oxana,
Most of the schools in Asian countries really advertise positions for native speakers, but some of them definitely consider qualified non-natives with high standard of English. Try to get in touch with them, and send your CV to as many potential employers as possible. Here are some websites which might be useful in your search: http://www.eslcafe.com , www.tefl.com , www.tefl.net . Don't forget to check the forums on these websites - they might be very useful and prevent you from unpleasant experience with dishonest employers.
Good luck to you in your search!

Dear Oxana,

Do not hesitate to take a CELTA course here. Though you have less chance in Korea since last scandal

or here www.elgazete.com/news in English

You still have a chance in other Asian countries (except Japan)

But you should be careful anyways... I would start with one of the respectful English language schools in Russia.

Take a look at http://www.bkc.ru/eng/: If you are not a native speaker (Russian or originally from other countries) but obtained internationally recognized certificate (Cambridge CELTA or Trinity TESOL) we also can consider your application.

http://www.bkc.ru/eng/teachers/: See below all teachers’ nationalities (country of origin) in the diagram (below). There are many Russians...

Besides, the school has so called «Exchange program» with other IH schools throughout the world: http://www.ihworld.com/directory/schools.asp

All in All, you can explore a job here http://www.teachabroad.com/ The first question is WHAT COUNTRY DO YOU WANT TO TEACH IN?

Cheers

Thank you Nina and Rod for your replies.

I don't feel urgent to go teach in Asia. I just wanted to mix teaching of English with study of another foreigh language, preferably Chinese or Korean, and - on location. Well, if I make my mind to take a CELTA course, it will certainly be Moscow.

As for Korea, I've recently read that the country's legislation prohibits hiring English teachers non-native speakers. (Is this the case in Japan as well?) Then it's no wonder that the police haunts them and sends those adventurers out. So Korea doesn't count.
